CHAPTER 13

“Some friendship is closely akin to treachery.”

—Robert N. Lee

Maxwell

The quote was one I’d used more than once. Now it remained in the back of my mind, playing over again several times.

I unbuttoned my jacket before climbing inside the rental, making certain the second magazine was safely positioned in my pocket. She was watching everything I did as I closed the door, a visible shiver going through her.

“Everything okay?” she asked.

Today wasn’t the day to be completely honest with her. She was under enough stress as it was. “Fine. Just putting things in order.”

“You forget that I’m not a child any longer. You don’t need to keep things from me.”

“That’s not what I’m trying to do.” She would need to learn every detail soon enough, but not until I figured out who she could trust.

“Nice car. A Maserati. A treat for yourself?” she asked. “Drive a sports car while you’re on duty.”

As I started the engine, I allowed a grin for the first time in a while. “It matches the one I own in LA.”

“Oh, a rich guy, huh?” Her question was laced with a hint of mischief.

“Something like that. The security business has been very good to me.”

“I’d like to hear more about it.”

I shot her a look as I roared out of the driveway, immediately checking the rearview mirror. “I won’t bore you to death with details.”

“Translation. You can’t talk about your work or your clients, but I’m interested, nonetheless. In fact, I’d like to learn more about you in general.”

“That’s allowed but there’s not much to tell. I’m not an exciting guy. I work long hours, often on assignment three to five weeks at a time. I’m rarely at my house.”

“What do you do for fun?”

“Work. What do you do for fun?”

She was far too quiet for a few seconds, which I wasn’t used to. “You know what’s strange? I have one true girlfriend and I’ve known her since the fourth grade. Other than that, I dance.”

“What about people at the ballet company?”

“You really don’t know anything about the life. Do you?”

“No, I don’t. Why don’t you tell me about it?”

“It’s dog eat dog. I meant what I said earlier about the girls. They’re all neurotic bitches. However, most of the male dancers are worse, or they’re trying to peel away every girl’s leotard. My understudy hated me for getting the role, the majority of soloists certain I was selected because of my father and his brutal dictatorship. Even most of the dancers in the corps won’t talk to me.”

“So why is it so important for you to be there if that’s the way you feel?” I asked, genuinely curious.

“Because I’m not there to make friends. It’s the most powerful ballet company in the world. It’s been my dream since I could remember. I only hope I’m good enough.”

“You’re good enough. You’re amazing.”

She tipped her head. “A compliment.”

I glanced over and my hunger for her burned as if acid had been tossed in my direction. “Every once in a while, they happen.
